Epicurean Event to Feature Local Food, Wine
On Tuesday, May 15, the Aurora Inn Dining Room will present the last event of its epicurean series before the summer break; the Dining Room’s epicurean events will resume in the fall. Each of the evening’s five courses will be paired with wines or spirits provided by local vintners and distillers. The event will commence with a 6:30 p.m. reception, and dinner will begin at 7 p.m. The meal costs $60, plus tax and gratuity.

Dragon Boat Fest in Ithaca celebrates Asian American heritage, May 12th from 5:30pm – 8pm
The Ithaca Asian American Association will open the 7th Annual Finger Lakes International Dragon Boat Festival with a celebration of Asian-Pacific American Heritage 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Finger Lakes Wine Center, 237 S. Cayuga St.
May is Asian American Heritage Month, and the public is invited to reflect on the past, celebrate the present and start the 7th Annual Finger Lakes International Dragon Boat Festival with this event.
Canadian activist touring N.Y. against fracking, May 21st – 24th
A Canadian scientist fighting a gas company over contaminated well water in her home province is touring the Southern Tier and central New York with a message against the large-scale hydraulic fracturing technique proposed for the state.
Jessica Ernst, of Alberta, is suing the EnCana gas company and provincial regulators, alleging the company contaminated her water well with methane and toxic chemicals and the agencies were negligent. Ernst, described as an environmental consultant to the oil and gas industry, Now, she will present “The Truth and Consequences of Fracking” on four nights, May 21-24, in Elmira, Owego, Ithaca and LaFayette.
Arcades Project to offer thought-provoking shopping experience in Ithaca, Friday from 5-9pm
On Friday, the Historic McCormick-Cowdry House at 408 E. State St. in Ithaca will be transformed into an experimental marketplace of literature, art and design. Local and regional independent presses, makers of art books and editions, conceptual artists and indie craft vendors will convene from 5 to 9 p.m. to offer visitors an alternative and thought-provoking shopping experience for the biannual Arcades Project.
The event will offer gallery visitors and shoppers a chance to purchase affordable and original works of art and literature. Expect to find original titles by local and regional presses, narrative and experimental film, art books, book arts, zines, jewelry, artist prints and art installations related to text and book arts. It is sponsored by Spring Writes and The Community Arts Partnership.
Book sale in Ithaca celebrates 65 years, opens this Saturday at 8am
The 2012 Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale will begin 8 a.m. Saturday at 509 Esty St.
The sale will run during three consecutive three-day weekends, with an additional Tuesday on the final weekend.
Sale dates are Saturday, Sunday and Monday, May 5-7; May 12-14; and May 19-22.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. except on the first day, when the sale begins at 8 a.m., and on the final day, when it starts at noon.
